University of Rochester

Rochester, NY

The University of Rochester, founded in 1850, is one of the country's leading private research universities.  Rochester operates on a personal scale, creating exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary study and close work with faculty.  The University consistently ranks among the top in federally financed science, engineering, medical, and other research.  The unique Rochester Curriculum invites students to learn what they love, allowing for both focus and flexibility.  There are no required subjects.  Students pursue at least one major within one of the three great branches of learning - the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences (including math and engineering) - and take a cluster in each of the other two.

The University of Rochester understands entrepreneurship to mean the transformation of an idea into an enterprise that creates value—economic, social, or cultural. The University of Rochester Center for Entrepreneurship was launched by an Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation grant awarded to the University in 2003.

The Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year (KEY) is a signature program at the University of Rochester that provides a fifth, tuition-free year of college, where students pursue an entrepreneurial endeavor. Students apply to the program and propose a KEY Project such as launching a new venture, internships, business plan development, research or analysis. Many of past KEY students’ projects have focused on social entrepreneurism.

The Eastman New Venture Challenge
is a contest to encourage new thinking and innovative ideas in music. It gives Eastman School of Music students the opportunity to fulfill a business plan that could result in the launch of a new entrepreneurial enterprise. Successful entrants will have demonstrated creativity, innovation, uniqueness, and added value to the music field.

This course shows how Rochester embraces entrepreneurship in nontraditional areas.
