Mississippi State University’s mission is to educate the workforce and leaders of the future, produce robust research for our state and nation, and provide expert services to our citizens, communities and businesses.

It is the vision of the Entrepreneurship programs at Mississippi to:

  • Help engineering students who are interested in business receive the education and experience to pursue a technical/business career.
  • Provide a forum for learning and experiencing business firsthand from professionals.
  • Build teamwork and communication skills through interdisciplinary project teams.
  • Assist students who desire to launch a business with foundational knowledge, experience, and mentoring.
  • Ensure that students go into the work place with a working knowledge of business and as a more valuable employee.

The Jack Hatcher Entrepreneurship Certificate Program is the key entrepreneurship program at Mississippi State University. The program is designed for engineering students who plan to pursue a career combining technical and business skills, including a start-up business, working for an entrepreneur in the early years of a company, or those interested in corporate management. The program combines experiential learning with traditional education.

The Hatcher Annual Business Plan Competition takes place in the spring semester within the College of Engineering. Teams compete via a ten minute presentation and a written business plan before a panel of judges. First place receives $1,000 and is eligible to compete in regional and national business plan competitions.

The COB Internet Plan Competition is held in collaboration with the Department of Marketing in the College of Business. Teams compete by presenting their business plans before a panel of judges consisting of alumni and faculty. The winner receives a $5,000 award and is expected to pursue his/her start-up business over the summer term.

The Thad Cochran Endowment for Entrepreneurship was established in 2005 to promote entrepreneurship among MSU faculty, students and Mississippi businesses. Faculty, alumni, and students can apply for support for their business startups which may include awards, grants, scholarships, access to incubation space, mentoring, and networking opportunities.

Seminar Series GE 3011:
Entrepreneurs share their experiences and teach the basics of the business process. Students write papers on talks by speakers of their choice. Students gain an understanding of the role the entrepreneur plays in creating start-up companies and leading young existing companies. This course allows students to view the success of other entrepreneurs and hear first hand their experience along the road to success.

Company/Project Experience:
The company experience may include a project proposed by a participating company, student, or faculty member. Students then submit a report and business plan for their project to the director upon completion. Through this process companies bring real-world problems for student projects. Students also build relationships with entrepreneurial and corporate mentors.
