Chapman University Kicks Off Global Entrepreneurship Week

CHAPMAN University’s Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics hosted its first annual Orange Ball Drop in the newly constructed Attallah Piazza counting down to the launch of Chapman’s Global Entrepreneurship Week 2008 on Sunday, November 16, 2008. Chapman was coined the “Times Square of the Entrepreneurship World” leading the United States with the first official event of the Week at 9 p.m. to coincide with midnight Eastern Standard Time when Global Entrepreneurship Week officially started.

In past years, Chapman University delighted in upstaging entrepreneurship universities officially chosen to kick off National Entrepreneurship Week. In 2008, the Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City, a premier entrepreneurial organization, persuaded universities and organizations in 75 countries to participate in Global Entrepreneurship Week. Sponsors included IBM, Ernst & Young and NYSE Euronext.
Chapman hosted a wealth of activities and events that connected students, alumni, educators, business leaders, government officials and others in taking action to catalyze an entrepreneurial society.
Chapman was spotlighted by Kauffman as a premier GEW campus, as Bo Fishback, VP of Entrepreneurship and Erin Wiley from the Public Forum Institute made special guest appearances at the Orange Ball Drop.

What Goes on at Global Entrepreneurship Week

The purpose of this event was to create awareness and desire to consider entrepreneurial pursuits in young adults, primarily aged 16 to 35. Over the week, more than 50,000 events had been scheduled worldwide. Chapman hosted a wealth of activities and events that connected students, alumni, educators, business leaders, government officials and others in taking action to catalyze an entrepreneurial society. Guests and panelists from China, Switzerland, Washington D. C., and Korea assembled to share their views on entrepreneurship in a global marketplace.

Chapman also involved students, faculty, alumni, campus friends and the Orange County business community in other events including:

  • A student micro-loan fundraiser sponsored by Greekbook.com and others to collect money for entrepreneurs in underdeveloped countries
  • The first International Entrepreneurs’ Film Marathon screening movies that feature entrepreneurs from around the world
  • Free business and entrepreneurship advising by Chapman’s Leatherby Center faculty and partner organizations

Chapman plans to become the leading national and global center for data and research on angel investing, with a reality-based education approach and practical entrepreneurial opportunities for students through the Leatherby Center.
