eGames Breaks the Business Plan Competition Model: Celebrates the Spirit of Entrepreneurship

NC State University’s eGames started out big in Spring 2009 – eight award categories, 200 participants, and $30,000 in awards.  Judging from its success, the event will only continue to grow.

The idea is to provide student entrepreneurs from any discipline with a venue to showcase their innovations.

A Different Kind of Business Plan Competition

Unlike the traditional business plan competition for entrepreneurial students, the eGames celebrate the spirit of student entrepreneurship across all colleges and disciplines at NC State.  The idea is to provide student entrepreneurs from any discipline with a venue to showcase their innovations.

Inspired by Greek deities who embody the same type of achievements that the eGames are based on, the competition features eight award categories that range from the most innovative use of an everyday product to an extreme website makeover for a nonprofit to an investor presentation judged by local venture capitalists.

And yes, there’s a business plan competition category, too.  Since “making meaning” through entrepreneurship is central to the goal of entrepreneurial education at NC State, several categories emphasize service through sustainability.

Once a student decides to enter the eGames, valuable resources such as workshops and feedback from experts are provided along the way to the final competition. This helps assure that everybody who enters comes out a winner, regardless of the outcome of the competition.
